A Lent Readrer

Devised by Nikki Eastwood.

Lent is the forty-day season of reflection and preparation

for the death and resurrection of Jesus.

It?s a time of re:pentance, of seeing again Jesus? sufferings

and re:thinking how we are called to take up our own crosses.

Some of us give up some foods like chocolate or drink like wine

or habits like television during this season as a sort of fasting.

Others take on something new in their lives,

like visiting those who are ill or housebound,

or taking on more exercise, or praying.

It is a good season to re:view how we live, let some things go,

and develop new habits for living as disciples.

Each day through Lent there is a reading and a thought.

Ask the Holy Spirit to guide us to prayer, action and change as He works in our lives.

Do as little or as much as He directs, in blessing those around us.

Grace, mercy and peace.

This reader is/was for Lent 2013, but can be used any year.

    Lent Preface to Communion Prayer

    Holy God,

In these forty days, you lead us into the desert of repentance,

that through a pilgrimage of prayer and discipline,

we may grow in grace, and learn to be your people again.

Through fasting prayer and acts of service,

you bring us back to your generous heart.

Through the study of your holy word,

you open our eyes to your presence in the world,

and free our hands to welcome others

into the radiant splendour of your love.

PS Although there are 40 Days in the season Lent,

    this omits the Sundays

and so there are actually more calender days during Lent

than the 40 we often quote.
